Eight Spotted Crab Spider by melvynyeo Eight Spotted Crab Spider by melvynyeo
Finally found a adult Eight spotted crab spider with full panda eyes!! :) :) See the juvenile here [link]

Source [link]
Platythomisus octomaculatus females reach a body length of about 20 mm, males grow up to 4 mm. The smooth, convex cephalothorax is quite large, with smooth, slender legs that are not particularly long. The legs are often free of spines, with the occasional exception on the first two pairs. The opisthosoma is stout and oval.

P. octomaculatus has a yellow-orange color with four round, black marks on the cephalothorax and seven large black marks on the opisthosoma, with one spot near the cephalothorax, and the other six following behing in two longitudinal rows. The legs are of a bright yellow, with the outer halves black.

P. octomaculatus is a rather rare species. One of the plants it has been found on is the yellow Hibiscus tiliaceus. In captivity it was observed to feed on bees.

The genus name is combined from Ancient Greek platys “flat” and the name of the crab spider genus Thomisus.

It looks kinda fake. Not that you doctored the photo, but it looks like it's not a real think.

I know that it is, but it just looks odd.

But it came out very well for something so small. :)

Yes.. i agree with you :) The color is so plastic looking that it look like a toy. For something so colorful, it's amazing they are rarely seen in the wild.

Well, I'm pretty sure that they aren't that big and are easily not seen.

They are pretty big compares to crab spider standard. Body alone is 2cm.

Could be.

They have a hard time breeding?

So far, no one have seen the male. No records of any mating for the spider! :)

That could be your answer right there.

Males are out numbered by females. That happens in a few species.
