Celyphidae, Beetlefly by melvynyeo Celyphidae, Beetlefly by melvynyeo
Celyphidae, commonly known as beetle flies or beetle-backed flies, are a family of flies (Order Diptera). About 90 species are known from the Oriental and Afrotropic biogeographic regions.

Celyphidae are small to medium-sized and easily recognised. The scutellum is enlarged, forming a protective shell over the abdomen, giving them a beetle-like appearance. Also, like many beetles, Celyphidae are often shiny or metallic in color. The wings, when at rest, are folded beneath the scutellar "shell".

Now this is a brilliant insect! All the adorable charm of a fruit fly with the pretty shell of a beetle to boot! I've never seen or heard of a beetle fly, what an amazing curiosity of nature! Thank you for photographing this remarkable, lesser known insect and sharing it with the world!

Mind=blown.

Scrolling down, I see many people actually put the same comment. As with so many of your photographed creatures, I'd love to know just how they evolved. The path they took.
This looks like a straight up cross-breeding of fruit flies (the Drosophilidae kind) and (some kind of) beetle. Unreal! Have you ever played Jade Cocoon? In that game you just mash creatures together and they look like this, basically.

What a mind-blowing creature! If I couldn't see the halteres, I would think it was some kind of mutant hybrid.
